Question sets are a flexible form tools that let events collect important customer information from different touch points within your business setup. These touch points include the checkout page, the thank you page after a successful purchase, the order status page where customers can reference their orders, the customer account area for managing personal details, and the Point of Sale (POS) system. For example, you might require a safety waiver during checkout to boost compliance and lower risk; ask customers to upload a verification photo on the order status page before they can download their tickets, adding a layer of security and authenticity; or allow attendees to easily update their registration info by logging into their account before check-in, making the registration process smoother.  Handling the answers to your collected event data is now simple and intuitive, thanks to the handy product, customer, and order application blocks built right into your admin workflows. These app blocks allow you to easily edit responses and even edit photos linked to particular questions. Plus, you can create and update questions straight from the Point of Sale (POS) system, making the whole process smoother and giving you full control over the content and information you collect. Finally, every set of questions is carefully crafted to connect either to the customer or their particular order. This thoughtful method makes sure that the responses stay tied to the order or the buyer for many years, supporting ongoing personalization and a seamless customer experience. For instance, a buyer might keep their membership photo for a few years before needing to update it with a new one. Likewise, your website could easily remember your customers’ dietary preferences each time they visit, customizing their shopping journey and boosting their loyalty. The possibilities for using question sets are endless, providing powerful ways to improve customer interaction along with sound event management and logistics.

Intelligently gather attendee information across all Shopify surfaces.

Answer Synchronization

Question Sets and their answers now stay synchronized across the entire Shopify ecosystem in real time. Whenever a customer or staff member updates a Question Set response, the latest information is immediately reflected everywhere it is accessed, ensuring everyone is working with the most current data.

This includes:

  • Customer Accounts – Customers can view and update their information after logging into their account on your website.
  • Shopify Admin – Staff have instant access to the latest customer responses while managing orders, admissions, and event logistics.
  • Shopify POS – Cashiers and gate staff see updated answers when scanning tickets or checking guests in.
  • Checkout Thank You Page – Customers are presented with their most up-to-date information immediately after completing their purchase.
  • Order Status Page – Customers can review and interact with the latest Question Set responses from their order status page.
Benefits
  • Eliminate outdated customer information across Shopify.
  • Give staff immediate access to the latest guest details during admissions and check-in.
  • Allow customers to keep important information—such as membership photos, waivers, dietary preferences, emergency contacts, or other custom fields—current at any time.
  • Deliver a seamless experience by keeping all Shopify surfaces synchronized automatically, with no manual updates required.

How to Create a Question

1. Enter a Label

Start by entering a Label. This is the question customers will see.

Example: What is your T-shirt size?

2. Add a Description (Optional)

Use the Description field to provide additional instructions or helpful information.

The Description field supports:

  • Bold text using **bold**
  • Clickable links using [Label](https://example.com)

This is perfect for waiver links, policies, or additional instructions.

3. Select a Question Type

Choose how customers should answer the question.

Examples include:

  • Open Text
  • Multiple Choice
  • Checkbox
  • Files
  • Toggle

Select the option that best matches the information you want to collect.

4. Choose Your Audience and Where Answers Are Stored

The Audience determines who is required to answer the question, while Store Answer On determines where those answers are saved in Shopify.

All Ticket Holders
  • Every ticket holder must answer the question individually.
  • Each response is stored on the Customer and is linked to that person's Shopify Customer ID.
  • Because answers are tied to the customer, they can be reused across future orders, memberships, and events.
Order
  • Only the buyer is required to answer the question.
  • The response is stored directly on the Shopify Order.
  • This option is ideal for collecting order-specific information that doesn't need to follow the customer beyond that purchase.

Choose the option that best matches the information you're collecting.

5. Configure the Lock Status

Choose when the answer should become read-only.

Available options include:

  • Never Locks – Customers can edit their answer at any time.
  • After First Answer – Locks once the customer submits their response. Ideal for waivers and acknowledgements.
  • After First Scan – Locks after the ticket is first scanned at POS.

6. Set Visibility for Each Surface

Decide where customers can view or answer the question. Each Shopify surface can be configured independently:

  • Checkout
  • Thank You Page
  • Order Status Page
  • Customer Account

You can choose whether the question is hidden, required, optional or read only on each surface.

  • Read only = Can view only
  • Hidden = Can not view
  • Required = Can view and must answer
  • Optional = Can view and may answer

Note: Shopify Admin and Shopify POS always provide read and write access to Question Sets regardless of these visibility settings, ensuring staff can always access and update customer information.

7. Review the Metafield Key

Metafield Key is automatically generated from your question label.

This key is used internally by Shopify to store customer responses and makes the data available throughout Shopify, including Shopify Flow, Liquid templates, APIs, and custom integrations. In most cases, this value does not need to be changed.

8. Save Your Question

Once you've configured all of the settings, click Save.

Your question is now ready to collect responses based on the audience, storage location, visibility, and lock settings you've selected. Question Set answers remain synchronized across Shopify, making them available wherever you choose to surface them.
